It’s a condition characterized by the presence of a high number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell involved in allergic responses) in the lining of the esophagus, leading to inflammation, damage, and dysfunction of the esophagus. This happens because your body reacts to certain foods, allergens, or other irritants. Over time, this can cause the esophagus to become inflamed and narrowed, making it harder to swallow.
The treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and managing symptoms. It usually includes a combination of diet changes, some medications like Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), topical-swallowed corticosteroids, Biologic drugs and/or endoscopic esophageal dilation.
EoE is a chronic condition, but with the right treatment, symptoms can be well-managed. It requires regular follow-ups with your specialist to monitor your condition and adjust treatment as needed.
